Ariel Kalma

Ariel Kalma (1947–2025) was a French musician and sound explorer working with recorder, saxophone, flute, synthesiser, and tape. After touring with Salvatore Adamo and collaborating with Baden Powell, he flew one-way to India in 1974 to study classical Indian music and develop his practice of drone and circular breathing. He worked as a technician at INA GRM in Paris, pioneering dual reel-to-reel tape loops as a layering system. His albums Le Temps des Moissons (1975) and Osmose (1978, recorded in Borneo) are central works. A 2014 retrospective on RVNG Intl. introduced him to a new generation.
