Antonio Russek

Antonio Raúl Russek Martínez (born 1954 in Torreón, Mexico) is a pioneer of sound art in Latin America. Trained in saxophone and piano, he moved to Mexico City to study film, physics, chemistry, acoustics and electronic sound at UNAM. In 1974 he installed his own electroacoustic studio in the Condesa neighborhood, the first of its kind in Mexico, and in 1978 founded the Centro Independiente de Investigación Musical y Multimedia. His 1982 piece Estudios para microcomputadora is considered among Mexico's first real-time electronic works, played on an Apple II Plus. His catalog of over 100 works spans ambient sound design, video art, radio art, sound sculpture and music for dance and theater.
