Anthony McCall

Anthony McCall (b. 1946) is a British artist based in New York, best known for "solid light" films that turn projected light itself into a sculptural object. His 1973 work Line Describing a Cone projects a slowly evolving line that, through haze in the air, becomes a tangible cone of light viewers can walk around and through.

Emerging from the experimental film and performance scenes of 1970s London and New York, McCall's work sits between cinema, sculpture, and drawing, foregrounding the physical apparatus of projection — light, dust, smoke, and duration — as the work's actual subject, rather than any image on a screen.
