Annea Lockwood

Annea Lockwood (b. 1939, Christchurch, New Zealand) is a composer and sound artist whose work has been consistently innovative and deeply attentive to the natural world for over six decades. She studied at the Royal College of Music in London and with Gottfried Michael Koenig at Bilthoven, and taught at Vassar College in New York for many years. Her Piano Transplants series (1969–72) placed instruments outdoors to be played by fire, water, and fauna. Her River Archive, begun in 1966, developed into three landmark sound map installations: of the Hudson (1982), the Danube (2005), and the Housatonic (2009).
