Ánde Somby

Ánde Somby (born 1958, Buolbmat, Norway) is a Sámi joiker, performer, and legal scholar. Active since 1974, he joiks persons, animals, and landscapes, drawing from both the reindeer-herder tundra tradition and the melodic eastern North Sámi village style. His album Yoiking with the Winged Ones (Ash International, 2016), recorded outdoors in Lofoten by Chris Watson, is a key document of his practice. He co-founded the Sámi publishing and record label Dat, has performed at the funeral of Malcolm McLaren, and is Associate Professor of Indigenous Rights Law at the University of Tromsø.
