Amalia Ulman

Amalia Ulman (b. 1989) is an Argentinian-Spanish artist working in performance, video, photography, and writing. Her most discussed work, Excellences & Perfections (2014), was a four-month performance on Instagram in which she inhabited the persona of a young woman moving through social media narratives of aspiration, self-improvement, breakdown, and recovery. It was received as authentic until Ulman revealed it as planned fiction, exposing the visual grammars of femininity and class aspiration in social media culture. Her practice later extended into narrative film with El Planeta (2021), an absurdist comedy starring herself and her mother, which premiered at Sundance.
