Alva Noto
Alva Noto is the alias of Carsten Nicolai, a German artist and musician born in 1965 in Karl-Marx-Stadt (now Chemnitz). He co-founded the Raster-Noton label with Olaf Bender and Frank Bretschneider in 1996, a central platform for minimal and digital electronic music. His recordings explore the intersection of sound and image through click tones, data-derived structures, and micro-processed noise. Key collaborations include ongoing work with Ryuichi Sakamoto and with Olaf Bender as Senking. He represents Germany at major international exhibitions and maintains a sustained institutional presence across art and music contexts.
