Akio Suzuki

Akio Suzuki (b. 1941, Pyongyang) is a Japanese sound artist and instrument builder whose practice is rooted in attentive listening and the relationship between body, environment, and sound. After his early event-based works in Nagoya during the 1960s — including the self-documented "Throwing Objects Down a Staircase" event at Nagoya Station in 1963 — he developed a practice centered on what he calls "projection" and "following," tracking the behavior of sound in natural spaces.

In the 1970s, Suzuki began building original instruments, most notably the Analapos, an echo instrument constructed from two metal tubes connected by a coil spring.
